Knut Hamsun

Norwegian writer, winner of 1920 Nobel Prize, also a Nazi sympathizer, he lived from 1859-1952, so Viggo never knew the man. Viggo could just be fascinated by Hamsun's work.
Hamsun is considered a literary genius and his novel "Sult" (Hunger) a master piece.
I vaguely remember a Danish film about Hamsun, portraying his life and marriage and the commotion about him having nazi sympathies, I will dig into that. The following is a quote from this site:
www.kirjasto.sci.fi/khamsun.htm
Read more here. Hamsun never joined the Norwegian Nazi party, but he wrote a series of pro-Fascists articles. When he met in 1943 Adolf Hitler and Josef Goebbels, he gave Goebbels his Nobel Prize medal as a token of his esteem. These meetings have inspired stories, in which Hamsun is credited with saving Jews from the Nazis. However, the journalist and writer Arne Tumyr has claimed in his biography of the author, that these stories are not true, and that Hamsun only succeeded in infuriating Hitler with his complaints about the conduct of German troops in his home country.

Karen Blixen

the painting "Karen Blixen's birds" is related to her.
Always Smiling says "I was already a long time interested in Karen Blixen and her fascinating life, and was pleasently surprised Viggo related a painting to her."
The interesting story about Karen Blixen and her birds is I think what this painting is all about.
At HOT someone mentioned that bird names are written on the canvas , so I read through her biography and this is what I found: Karen Blixen was born as Dinesen in Denmark, Rungstedlund (this is where the museum is) and returned there in 1931, after she lived in Africa (this is what out of Africa is about) for 17 years.
Untill her death in 1962 she lived in the house in Rungstedlund, where she wrote all her famous stories. Behind the house there is a garden, a meadow and grove and in accordance with Karen Blixen's wishes, the area is preserved as a bird sanctuary, the benches in the grove are named after birds or people with a personal link to the house.
In a radio broadcast in July 1958, Karen Blixen talked about her plans to make Ringstedlund a protected area in order to provide a stop-over site for migratory birds. She asked her listeners to give one kron to the foundation so that the plans could be carried out. In the bird sanctuary there are about 200 nesting boxes and 40 different species of birds now breed in there. Kare Blixen Museet is also mentioned on the recommendation page at PP. About the painting Karen Blixen´s Birds: On the top is written in danish: "Oversigt over Ringstedtlunds ynglefugle optalt af Dansk Ornitologisk Forskning (not sure about the last word. I can´t read it) de opgivne tal angiver antal ynglende par." This means that "this is an overview of Ringstedtlunds breeding birds counted by Danish Ornitologic ....... . The numerals are the numbers of breeding pairs. Regarding Karen Blixen I fell in love with her after watching the movie "Out of Africa" starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. I did some research then and found her to be a facinating and brave woman and very vulnerable too. More and more this painting fascinates me, you see, the breeding pairs of birds, and I read that the bird sanctuary is supervised by the Danish Ornithological Society which has hung and maintains the breeding boxes.
I have this gut feeling our man was at the museum!

Trolls

Figures in Norse mythology, sort of gnomes.
I thought I've read somewhere that a troll was hanging in the corner in the Robert Mann Gallery, while he had an exhibition there. On some websites trolls are described as evil and think it is fun to scare people, on other as very friendly and extremely shy. But never make a troll angry. He will take revenge.
Trolls can be very big or very small. Some can be so gigantic that there are growing trees on their back.
If you don´t look very carefully you wouldn´t know there is a troll right in front of you. They come out of their hiding places when it´s dark. When the sun is shining they burst or turn into stone (sounds familiar) If you call them by their name they will turn into stone as well, so don´t, because a troll will bring you happiness and richness.

Also a small figurine with wild "hair". Did Henry play with trolls?

Ringsted

Town on Sjælland where his Danish relatives come from and still live, I believe.
Here's a little tidbit, I found in a danish interview, that I found at TORN from a while ago, “I think of a beautiful landscape, I think of a land where I can be myself and meet my family, where my cousins regard me as Viggo from Ringsted and tease me, as they tease everybody else – teasing is obviously a Danish way of expressing friendship. In that way Denmark means incredibly much to me.” Outrup, Elsbjerg and Copenhagen are also mentioned in the same interview, As grown up he returned to Denmark, and he has lived there for several times, and among other things worked as a carpenter and lorry driver in Copenhagen and as a waiter at Jan Hurtigkarl’s (famous chef), and for a short period he earned his living as a truck driver in Esbjerg harbour.

The Shandon Star

I thought it was going to be a boat but the one I found is a bar: Shandon Star is the city's true litmus test of dive-bar aficionados. Quite frankly, nobody does dingy better than this cheap midtown Irish watering hole. Upon entering the spacious Shandon (or, as youthful regulars like to call it, the Shand-own), you're affronted by a row of OTB-types lined up at the bar on the left and a yucky-looking hot buffet behind plexiglass on the right. Turns out the food is quite edible (cheap, too! three bucks for roast beef, mashies, and beans!) and the stool pigeons are more than happy to strike up a conversation as you wait on your drinks. The jukebox is crammed with what you'd expect at such an establishment (U2, Neil Diamond, Springsteen, Billy Joel), the booze becomes on the house around round three, and there's always enough space for everyone, even on Saturday nights. Yet the Shandon never has that air of pathos that plagues most dives; it's actually the scene for many a rollicking good time.
But the absolute best thing about Shandon Star - so terrific that he merits his own paragraph here - is Pasquale, the somewhat senile old fogie who acts as nightly busboy/barkeep. Pasquale keeps you in pretzels and sliced dill pickles until your mouth puckers and is one of the gentlest personalities you'll ever find emptying out ashtrays. Rudy should throw him a ticker tape.
We may have to go to the backup at a later date, 'cause it sounds like something we shouldn't miss.

Dawn Fraser

Dawn Fraser was born in Sydney, Australia. She was the youngest of 8 children and took up swimming because it helped ease her asthma.
Dawn was 19 years old when she won the gold in the 100 m freestyle at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. She was nicknamed 'water baby' when she anchored the Australian team to gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay. She also won silver in the 400 m freestyle.
She won the gold in the 100 m at the 1960 Rome Olympics too and then again at the 1964 Tokyo Games to become the first swimmer in Olympic history to win gold in the same event in three consecutive games.
At Tokyo, the 27-year-old startled the Japanese by climbing the flagpole at the emperor's palace and taking the flag as a souvenir! She paid a heavy price for this misdemeanour, being banned for ten years from international sports. The ban was later reduced to four years.
During her 9-year swimming career, Dawn set 28 world records and won 8 Olympic medals. She lowered the world mark in her pet event, the 100 m freestyle, no less than 10 times, swimming it under a minute in 1964.
Dawn Fraser was named Australia's greatest female athlete in 1988.

Lillian Gish

an actress, here's a quote from her biography page: Not only was Lillian Gish born in the right era, but she was also born with the ethereal beauty and grace to make her a star in the silent film industry. If Mary Pickford was the silent cinema's greatest personality, Lillian was its greatest actress. She lived from 1893-1993. Here's is the link to her official website
