WITNESS (1985)
Character: Moses Hochleitner

Thriller headlining Harrison Ford.

Viggo's character is a young Amish farmer.

SALVATION (1987)
Character: Jerome Stample

Satire on religious media. Characters uniformly despicable. Not much Viggo, but this is where he met Exene Cervenka, who he married sometime in 1987.

FRESH HORSES (1988)
Character: Green

Viggo as white trash; very effective in minimal screen time, at the end of the movie. Safe to fast forward to his scenes. Apparently the reason he was cast for Indian Runner. Who can figure?

PRISON (1988)
Character: Burke/Forsythe Electrocution

Viggo's first headliner role, in a horror movie that is better than one might expect. He gets to run around in his underwear a lot, and has some very weird effects on the people around him.

LEATHERFACE/TCM3 (1990)
Character: Tex

Standard horror fare, huge amounts of blood & gore. Viggo is cute in an apron. Is it sexy or creepy when he licks his fingers?

YOUNG GUNS II (1990)
Character: John W. Poe

Standard horse opera. Volume II of anything is rarely good. Viggo's in the posse.

THE REFLECTING SKIN (1990)
Character: Cameron Dove

Philip Ridley directs a tale of madness in the midwest, around the time of nuclear testing in the Pacific. Viggo's character appears halfway through (he rarely gets enough screen time) and makes the neighbourhood relationships even more complicated than they were.

TRIPWIRE (1990)

Action film. Chase scenes. Not enough Viggo.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON(1990)
Character: Delroy

A very short made-for-TV movie where Viggo plays a deceased but much loved rock star.

THE INDIAN RUNNER (1991)
Character: Frank Roberts

A tour de force, Viggo's character and David Morse's (as his brother) revolve around each other and light up a depressing and fairly routine plot. Sean Penn's directorial debut, and it shows. In spite of that, one of Viggo's best movie roles, and not just for the nude scene.

BOILING POINT (1993)
Character: Ronnie

Yet another crime drama. Viggo's character is a very stupid ex-con. Probably a good thing they kill him off.

RUBY CAIRO/DECEPTION (1993)
Character: Johnny Faro

A little in the intro, and then again about two thirds of the way into the film, pretty standard for Viggo screen time in the earlier movies. A wooden plot and wooden main characters. Viggo's the bad guy again, dies a very public death. Shag scene cut from North American version.

CARLITO'S WAY (1993)
Character: Lalin

Viggo isn't on screen long, and he whines most of the time he is. Yet another mob flick. On the other hand, he actually upstages Pacino!

Almost no Viggo, although he makes the credits.

THE CREW (1994)

Incredibly stupid and improbable plot revolving around homophobia and a bunch of unlikeable people on a boat. Viggo's character is despicable, but sexy in shorts.

AMERICAN YAKUZA (1994)
Character: Nick Davis/David Brandt

A rare headliner opportunity for Viggo, and he makes what he can of a standard plot about mob rivalries. Lovely in jeans! Not to mention buckets of fake blood. Watch for the funny bit with the tape.

CRIMSON TIDE (1995)
Character: Lt. Peter 'Weps' Ince

Viggo's character plays a pivotal role in this submarine suspense tale. Nice character role for him. Looking very good in shades of red, green & blue light and lots of spray.

THE PROPHECY/GOD'S ARMY (1995)

Viggo makes a pretty good Lucifer. Interesting play opposite Christopher Walken. Thin on plot; heavy on atmosphere.

PASSION OF DARKLY NOON (1995)
Character: Clay

Another bizarre Philip Ridley venture, more madness, religious mania this time out. Viggo is reputed not to have spoken for the entire shoot (his character is a mute), but looks and grunts enough to be very well understood. He doesn't show up until halfway through. Good chemistry with Ashley Judd.

GIMLET (1995)
Character: Hombre(Man)

In Spanish with subtitles. Hard to find a clear copy of this movie in North America. Viggo's character is a stalker. A bit of a twist in the ending. Interesting, plus a bit of gratuitous nudity at the beginning. And it's great to hear him speaking Spanish.

ALBINO ALLIGATOR (1996)
Character: Guy Foucard

Viggo's character shows up halfway through, and dies a miserable death. This one is pretty awful, in spite of having a good cast on paper. Viggo does a decent Quebec French accent. But those specs - puhleez...

PORTRAIT OF A LADY (1996)

DAYLIGHT (1996)
Character: Roy Nord

If it's on TV, watch or tape the first 10-15 minutes. Yep, Viggo's character gets killed off that early. Nice while he's there, though! Wouldn't bother with the rest of this predictable flick.

VANISHING POINT (1997)
Character: Jimmy Kowalski

A made for TV movie, recently released on DVD. When his wife goes into a troubled labor while he is on the road over 1200 miles away Jimmy Kowalski, an ex race car driver and a former Army Ranger, attempts to elude police while trying to get home. Yet another REMAKE.

G.I. JANE (1997)
Character: Master Chief John James 'Jack' Urgayle

The best part of this is watching Viggo's character being miserable to Demi Moore. But who's prejudiced? Very military. Nice muscular legs in those shorts, though. And arms. Maybe this one's better than it appears at first sight. He reads poetry, too.

A PERFECT MURDER (1998)
Character: David Shaw

Revel in the artistic scruffiness of Viggo as con man. Opposite Gwynneth Paltrow and Michael Douglas; all the main characters are pretty despicable in this one. Watch for David Suchet as the police inspector. Better than average, for a REMAKE. (Why is Viggo in so many re-makes?)

PSYCHO (1998)
Character: Samuel 'Sam' Loomis

Gus Van Sant's widely panned REMAKE of the Hitchcock classic. Overly faithful to the original and thus a bit wooden. Viggo is gorgeous as usual, especially in the first 5 minutes, with his character walking around the hotel room in the buff.

A WALK ON THE MOON (1999)
Character: Walker Jerome

Viggo's character, a hippy blouse salesman, romances Diane Lane's "Pearl", a bored housewife with 2 children & an interfereing mother-in-law, all left at a summer cottage in 1969 by a TV-repairman husband. The moon landing features in the spectacular bus scene. Watch out for that waterfall! And don't get too stoned at Woodstock!

28 DAYS (2000)
Character: Eddie Boone

Sandra Bullock headlines this story of inmates at an addiction treatment centre. Runs the gamut of the emotions. Viggo's character is very sympathetic, if flawed. A pro baseball pitcher with alchohol & sex addictions. Lots of good characters in this one. Songs by Loudon Wainright III.

FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001)
Character: Aragorn/Strider

J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" Part 1

HIDALGO (2004)
Character: Frank Hopkins

Based on the life & exploits of Frank Hopkins, a part Lakota express rider who won many long distance races and championed the mustang breed. The race in question is the Ocean of Fire, across the Arabian desert, in the late 19th Century. Lots of cowboy Viggo. Can be argued that the horses upstage him at times.

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005)
Character: Tom Stall

Screenplay loosely based on the graphic novel of that name. A David Cronenberg film (weird & interesting). Shot in Toronto & nearby Ontario towns. Received critical acclaim and was widely touted for awards but partly since Cronenberg is a bit of an outsider didn't get any. (I mean, a Canadian? I ask you!)

EASTERN PROMISES (2007)

Character: Nikolai
Luzhin

The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), who is tied to one of London's most notorious organized crime families. His carefully maintained existence is jarred when he crosses paths with Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers potential evidence against the family. Now Nikolai must put into motion a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution.

Lots of award nominations for Viggo, and VERY well deserved! Here's hoping for at least one more outing with Cronenberg.

GOOD (2008)
